This module aims at enabling students to have a wider horizon of the complex economic development with a balance of theory and practice. In addition to the introduction of the basic concepts of political economy and the major role of government in economy, this module emphasis upon the analysis of the operation of the major economic sectors and related policies against the social and political background of Hong Kong. Module topics include an overview of Hong Kong economy, the historical development of Hong Kong economy, business cycles and economic growth, government-business relations, monetary and financial system, a labour market and unemployment, income inequality and poverty, and property market and housing policy. With case studies of current economic issues, students learn how to apply their knowledge of economy.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. describe the development of Hong Kong economy;

  2. explain the workings of the major economic sectors and related policies with reference to current economic issues;

  3. evaluate the role of government in the economic development of Hong Kong economy; and

  4. apply relevant basic economic and political concepts to analyse the workings of the major economic sectors and related policies against the social and political background of Hong Kong.
